Choosing to leave her homeland of Moab, she follows her mother-in-law Naomi to Isreal after the death of her husband. Upon reaching Bethlehem she meets and marries a man named Boaz, who is of the Royal house of Judah. This chain if seemingly unrelated events sets the stage for future kings of the nation of Isreal, and the coming of the Messiah.
After Naomi’s two sons die, one of them being Ruth’s husband, Naomi is intent on leaving Moab and moving back to Bethlehem, her native land. Naomi’s other daughter-in-law is content to move on but Ruth cannot bring herself to let Naomi set out alone on the journey. She thinks of her as her own mother, not just a mother-in-law. She follows her, telling her that her people will be her people and her God will be her God.
